Quotes, Thoughts & Inspiration

************************************************************

Today I received the following from a Q9
subscriber, and this provided me with
sufficient motivation to search for and
find the 9 quotes presented here today.

Sometimes our light goes out but is
blown again into flame by an encounter
with another human being. Each of us
owes the deepest thanks to those who
have rekindled this inner light.
- Albert Schweitzer

Q9 will resume publication next week.

(1)

A man is ethical only when life, as such, is sacred to him,
that of plants and animals as well as that of his fellowman,
and when he devotes himself helpfully to all life that is in
need of help.
- Albert Schweitzer (01/14/1875-1965)

(2)

Very little of the great cruelty shown by men can really
be attributed to cruel instinct. Most of it comes from
thoughtlessness or inherited habit. The roots of cruelty,
therefore, are not so much strong as widespread. But the
time must come when inhumanity protected by custom and
thoughtlessness will succumb before humanity championed
by thought. Let us work that this time may come.
- Albert Schweitzer (01/14/1875-1965)

(3)

I don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I know:
the only ones among you who will be really happy are those
who will have sought and found how to serve.
- Albert Schweitzer (01/14/1875-1965)

(4)

What is the nature of this degeneration in our civilization
and why has it come about? The disastrous feature of our
civilization is that it is far more developed materially
than spiritually. Its balance is disturbed. Now come the
facts to summon us to reflect. They tell us in terribly
harsh language that a civilization which develops only on
its material side, and not in the sphere of the spirit heads
for disaster.
- Albert Schweitzer (01/14/1875-1965)

(5)

Not less strong than the will to truth must be the will
to sincerity. Only an age which can show the courage of
sincerity can possess truth which works as a spiritual
force within it.
- Albert Schweitzer (01/14/1875-1965)

(6)

The thinking man must oppose all cruel customs no matter
how deeply rooted in tradition and surrounded by a halo.
When we have a choice, we must avoid bringing torment and
injury into the life of another, even the lowliest creature;
to do so is to renounce our manhood and shoulder a guilt
which nothing justifies.
- Albert Schweitzer (01/14/1875-1965)

(7)

Let me give you one definition of ethics: It is good to
maintain life and to further life; it is bad to damage
and destroy life. And this ethic, profound, universal,
has the significance of a religion. It is religion.
- Albert Schweitzer (01/14/1875-1965)

(8)

Don't let your hearts grow numb.
- Albert Schweitzer (01/14/1875-1965)

(9)

Just as white light consists of colored rays, so reverence
for life contains all the components of ethics: love,
kindliness, sympathy, empathy, peacefulness and power to
forgive.
- Albert Schweitzer (01/14/1875-1965)
